Our Begonias are planted and the native Mountain Laurel are in full bloom and the prettiest we have seen in many years. The nursery Rhododendrons have bloomed but the native Rhododendrons will be blooming in a few weeks. The weather in Highlands has been perfect with just the right amount of rain. The waterfalls are full and the rivers are filled with freshly stocked fish. Become one with nature while hiking , maybe try a moderate hike to Secret Falls. Bring a bathing suit to cool off at the bottom of the falls in one of Mother Nature’s natural pools. This is one great secret you do not want to miss when coming to Highlands!

Don’t miss the total solar eclipse on August 21st, Highlands will be right along the full eclipse path. The moon and sun will line up with the Earth, which will cause total darkness for a few breathtaking minutes. This is a life event you do not want to miss!
As you know, Highlands is also known for great food! Popular chefs have made their way to Highlands and have done astounding work making up their most delightful signature dishes. One of Highlands most popular chef is Chef Wolfgang Green. Even though this is not the famous “Wolfgang Puck,” Wolfgang Green is still recognized internationally. His restaurant, “Wolfgang’s”, was rewarded 2016 “Best Place for Dinner in Highlands.” His restaurant is mostly popular for his New Orleans, French flair. The restaurant also includes a wine bistro which serves a lighter menu.
Chef Wolfgang Green will be one of many chefs that will be at the Highlands Food and Wine Festival. This year the festival will be held between, Thursday, November 9th and Sunday, November 12th. There will be many activities involving eating and drinking wine. Tickets are now on sale. Some events do sell out fast, so get your tickets soon! Every Friday night throughout the month, Friday Night Lights will take place right on Main Street. Each Friday introduces a different band to perform their unique style of mountain music. The entertainment begins at 6:00 pm and lasts until 8:00. This is a free event for the whole family to enjoy.
The weekend fun does not end there! Each Saturday evening you can catch more live music at the Kelsey-Hutchinson Park on 4th street for Saturdays on Pine. They offer all different styles of music that is suitable for the whole family.
The Highlands Biological Station offers many lectures, seminars, workshops, and camps throughout the season. The Biological Station includes their Nature Center and a trail through their Botanical Garden. For scheduled information, view their website at http://highlandsbiological.org/.
The 10th Annual Highlands Motoring Festival will be held on the 8th of June throughout the 11th. On the 10th, there will be the classic car show from 8 am until 3 pm. Judging will begin around 11:00 am. For event and ticket information, view their website at https://highlandsmotoringfestival.com/.
Also on the 10th, SOAR (Special Operations Adventure Race) will hold their 16th Annual Race this year. This event offers 6 hour and 12 hour races from running, climbing, rowing, and bicycling. If you are interested in participating in the races, pre check-in will take place on Friday the 9th between 2:00 and 6:00 pm at the Civic Center. Also on the 9th, from 5:00-7:00 pm, they will host a spaghetti dinner at the Highlands Civic Center. Proceeds will go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
The Highlands Historical Society Kids Camp will be held at the Highlands Historical Society from June 12th-June 16th. The camp is for children ages 8-11 years old. The camp is free to all children and teaches them the History of Highlands and life in the late 19th century. You can print off an application at http://highlandshistory.com/event_calendar.htm.
Come out on Saturday June 17th from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Kelsey-Hutchinson Park. New Orleans is coming to Highlands with a Low Country Boil! Tickets sold out early last year, so make sure you don’t miss out. All proceeds go towards the Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park to help keep the park maintained.
It’s that time of year for the Village Square Arts and Crafts Show! This will be held also at the Kelsey-Hutchinson Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 24th and 25th. The Arts and Crafts show is one of a kind, showing off many artistic and craftsmen skills.
The Martin- Lipsomb Performing Arts Center will be showing a few productions during the month. They will start the month out with a live broadcasted production starring Jude Law called “Obsession.” Show time is on Saturday the 3rd at 1:00 pm. On June the 10th, the PAC will show National Theatre Live’s production of, “Peter Pan.” Five men will take the stage at the PAC. The group, The Hit Men will liven up the stage on Saturday, June 17th at 5:00 pm. On the 24th, the Bluegrass band, Seldom Scene will perform on stage. The comedian, Keith Alberstadt will put on a show on the 1st of July. From now until July 8th, the Highlands Playhouse will be performing the broadway musical, “Cabaret.” Every night the Playhouse shows new popular movies on their retractable movie screen.
