With all of the April showers we had, the May flowers are in bloom and gorgeous! The trees are once again full of life as well as the town.  This is the time of year when our magnificent begonias will be replanted to awe our guests. We’ve had a great winter, but are excited to start up the season. With the new season here, there are many activities going on throughout the month.

 

Starting today is the Gem Show. The Gem Show is located right at the bottom of the mountain on HWY 64 West in Franklin. You can enjoy all different types of gems, jewelry, bead supplies and much more during May 7th-10th. There is no admission fee, so feel free to stop by as you please.

 

If you would rather look for gems than look at them, then check out the Jackson Hole Trading Post and Gem Mine. This is located on HWY 64 West between Highlands and Franklin. The gem mine is set in an astonishing location right next to the Cullasaja River and Falls. You can call for more information, 828-526-5850.

 

The Highlands Duplicate Bridge Club is hosting their annual Mother’s Day Bridge Tournament during May 6th- 9th. The tournament is located at the Highlands Community Building.  For information call 828-526-8334.

 

The Bascom will be hosting the Collective Spirits Food and Wine Festival during the weekend of May 14th-16th. . The 3 day festival includes: private wine dinners with top chefs and world class wines, wine and food tastings, and a Gala auction with dinner. Later in the month, the Mountain Garden Club will be having their annual plant sale at the Highlands Baseball Field. They will sale plants from 9:00 a.m.- noon on May 23rd. In case of bad weather, the sale will be changed to May 24th from 1:00 – 4:00.

 

The night of May 22nd will be the start of Friday Night Live on Town Square. The local Johnny Webb Band will be the entertainment for the night. They have performed at many venues around the Western North Carolina area. Their music includes a variety of country songs throughout a 50 year span, as well as their own. Come see the Johnny Webb Band perform between 6:00- 8:00  p.m.

 

The Lipscomb Performing Arts Center will be hosting National Theatre Live a couple times this month. On Saturday May, 9th , “The Hard Problem” will be performed and a week later “Man & Superman,” will be performed on the 16th.  For ticket and performance information, call the box office 828-526-9047.

 

The Highlands Playhouse will be showing some movies on their retractable 35’ movie screen. From now until May 7th the Playhouse will show, “Woman in Gold.” During May 8th- 14th, “Age of Adeline” will be showing. With Mother’s Day this weekend, the Highlands Playhouse will be performing “Love Letters.” This will only be performed for the 8th, 9th, and 10th.  Hurry and buy your ticket before they sell out! With much already to do in Highlands, there is always time to relax. Mitchell’s Lodge is the perfect place to unwind after a long winter. Our ducks and fish are enjoying their lake right on our property. Our pavilion is open for season with a wood burning fireplace to enjoy the crisp nights.
